IT Service Management

BMC Helix ITSM

From scattered IT tickets to connected service delivery.

Resolving an incident, approving a request or implementing a change often involves several people and systems. BMC Helix ITSM helps organise that work, with clear ownership, shared information and recorded follow-up.

Korper is a BMC Helix partner. Boermans Digital is your point of contact. We agree on the scope, delivery team and responsibilities before any implementation.

What is BMC Helix ITSM?

IT Service Management (ITSM) concerns delivering and improving IT services. BMC Helix ITSM is software that supports processes such as incident, problem and change management. A ticket records work; the process defines who acts, who decides and when the work is complete.

The value extends beyond a central ticket list. It also depends on agreements about priority, handover, approval and feedback. Software does not resolve unclear responsibilities on its own.

Which activities does it connect?

These areas answer different operational questions. Available features and additional products depend on the selected version, agreement and configuration.

Incident management

Restore a disrupted service: what has stopped working, who is affected and who will respond? Restoration may initially involve a workaround.

Problem management

Investigate recurring incidents and record an underlying cause or known error. Closing an incident does not mean its cause has been removed.

Changes and releases

Prepare changes, assess risk and impact, arrange approval and track execution. Approval authority remains an explicit process decision.

Service requests and knowledge

Offer recognisable requests and useful solutions. A self-service portal can use Digital Workplace, a product component to assess separately.

Assets and configurations

Manage assets and their lifecycle; describe relationships between systems and services in a CMDB, a configuration database. That information requires reliable maintenance.

Service targets and reporting

Define service targets and make follow-up visible. An SLA is a service agreement; a report alone does not guarantee it will be met.

When is it worth exploring?

Consider an organisation with several IT teams, recurring handovers, different suppliers or changes that affect business processes. The question is not simply how many tickets you have, but how much coordination, visibility and control you need.

  • Explore: tickets get lost between teams or ownership changes without a clear handover.
  • Improve first: an existing service management tool may be sufficient, but categories, ownership or knowledge management need attention.
  • Start simpler: clear working agreements and existing software may be sufficient for a small, straightforward process.

Where does AI help — and where do people remain responsible?

BMC Helix describes capabilities including grouping recurring incidents, helping people use knowledge and assisting service staff. HelixGPT offers generative AI: software that can draft an answer or summary. This is assistance, not evidence that a recommendation is correct or an action is safe.

Read and propose

Check whether an answer uses current information that the user may access. Have a person assess whether it fits the situation.

Decide and execute

Define separately whether an integration may read information, save a proposal or actually change something. A written instruction does not replace access controls.

Errors and exceptions

Define when a person takes over. If processing is uncertain, check the actual state before starting the action again.

Do not assume that every AI, Discovery, AIOps and portal capability is included in a single package. Confirm the required components, model selection, licences and integrations first.

Fictional process

Fictional example: an incident after a change

This example describes a possible working process, not a customer case or a functioning demonstration.

  1. Report

Employees cannot confirm orders after an application change. The service desk records the business impact and affected service.

  2. Assess

A person assesses urgency and links relevant reports. AI may suggest a connection; the team verifies it.

  3. Coordinate

The application team investigates the recent change. The responsible person decides whether rollback is needed and which approval applies.

  4. Restore and follow up

The team checks with users that order confirmation works again. Recurring causes and useful knowledge receive separate follow-up.

A ticket marked “resolved” is not independent proof that the business process works again. Agree on the functional check needed to establish this.

ITSM connects with the rest of your environment

For each integration, identify the required data, the authoritative system and what happens when processing fails. Consider identity and access, monitoring or an existing application. Confirm supported interfaces, version, permissions and additional licences before committing to an integration.

BMC Helix ITSM organises IT service delivery. Control-M focuses on scheduling and monitoring automated jobs and their dependencies. MFT focuses on file transfer. They can coexist in an environment; one does not automatically replace another.

BMC Control-M

Control over tickets, knowledge and business data

Tickets and knowledge articles can contain personal data and sensitive business information. Agree on what is necessary, who may access it and what should not be recorded, such as passwords. Assess storage, processing, access, logging, deletion and export for the chosen configuration.

HelixGPT may send contextual information to a language model. Its documentation distinguishes between models and agreements with the model provider. “Not used for model training” does not mean local processing or processing exclusively within Europe. Check the actual configuration and agreement.

Implementation starts with the work

Start with one recognisable service or process. Discuss the intended result and responsibilities first, then select the necessary configuration.

  1. Situation and baseline

Document the current process, teams, systems and constraints. Identify improvements possible with existing software.

  2. Scope and trial

Choose one request type or incident process, for example. Agree on acceptance criteria, exceptions and required test data.

  3. Configuration and connections

Define roles, permissions, categories, approvals, knowledge and integrations. Include migration and data quality where necessary.

  4. Test and use

Test normal situations and failures. Instruct employees, assign process and administration owners and document handover and any support arrangements.

  5. Evaluate

Compare lead times, handovers, reopened tickets and review effort with the baseline. Time saved only becomes a financial saving when expenditure is actually avoided.

What determines cost and effort?

Assess licences and additional components, configuration, integrations, migration, training and internal administration over the same period. Scope depends on the processes and existing environment. We therefore do not list a standard implementation price or fixed timeline.

BMC Helix records commercial SaaS terms in order forms and associated agreements. For additional investigation or delivery, we agree on approach, cost and responsibilities first. Ongoing administration or support is included only when explicitly agreed.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMC Helix ITSM just a ticketing tool?

No. Tickets record work, but ITSM also covers the agreements, processes and information used to organise service delivery. Your selected package and configuration determine which capabilities you use.

Can AI resolve all incidents autonomously?

Do not assume this. Its usefulness depends on the situation, available knowledge, permissions and controls. Start with a defined use case and verify the results.

Must we replace our current software?

Not automatically. Begin with the improvement you need. Better configuration, working agreements or a focused integration may be sufficient.

Are all Helix products included?

Do not assume so. Confirm features, additional products, licences, model usage and supported integrations for the quotation and version you are considering.

What happens in an initial conversation?

We discuss the IT service or handover that needs attention, the people involved and your existing tools. The first exploratory conversation takes about 30 minutes and is free and without obligation. Do not share confidential files or passwords for this introduction.

Read more from the supplier

Product documentation describes capabilities, not guaranteed outcomes for your organisation. Check the applicable version and agreement when making a specific choice.

Where does your IT service delivery get stuck?

Discuss one process, handover or question. We can then identify the information needed to choose an appropriate next step.

All exploratory conversations are free and without obligation. The first takes about 30 minutes. A request is not a confirmed appointment.
